Supporting your journey toward sustainable health and well-being

Understanding the Psychological Side of Bariatric Surgery
Bariatric surgery can be a life-changing step in the treatment of obesity, offering significant health and lifestyle benefits. However, it also involves complex emotional, behavioural, and psychological adjustments. As a psychologist with experience in this field, I provide comprehensive support for individuals at various stages of the bariatric journey.

Services Offered

Pre-Surgical Psychological Assessments

A psychological assessment is often a required step before undergoing bariatric surgery. It helps ensure you are emotionally and psychologically prepared for the changes surgery will bring.
Assessments typically include:

  • A comprehensive clinical interview

  • Use of self-report questionnaires

  • Review of mental health history, current functioning and support system

  • Review of substance misuse and childhood trauma history

  • Evaluation of eating behaviours, coping strategies, and readiness for change

  • A detailed report for your surgical team

Post-Surgical Psychological Support

After surgery, individuals may face new emotional challenges, such as:

  • Body image changes

  • Emotional eating or disordered eating patterns

  • Identity or relationship shifts

  • Anxiety, low mood, or adjustment difficulties

Therapy can support long-term success by helping you develop healthier coping mechanisms, build self-esteem, and maintain motivation throughout your weight-loss journey.

How It Works?

Assessment Duration
The bariatric psychological assessment typically involves a minimum of three 50-minute sessions. Additional sessions may be required depending on your individual circumstances and psychological needs.
Throughout the assessment process, you will receive evidence-based information to help you prepare for surgery, and we will explore any relevant psychological risk factors that may affect your readiness or outcomes.

Report Turnaround
Assessment reports are generally completed within 1–2 weeks following the final session and can be shared with your surgical team with your consent.

Therapy Sessions
Therapy is available on a short- or long-term basis, depending on your goals.

  • Pre-operative therapy can support you in addressing any emotional or behavioural factors that may need to be resolved before surgery.

  • Post-operative therapy is also available to help you adjust to the psychological and lifestyle changes that follow surgery.

Format
Sessions are offered in-person at locations in Greystones and Dún Laoghaire, or online via a secure video platform.

Fee
The fee is €130 per 50-minute session, whether for assessment or therapy. Pre-operative psychological report costs €260.

Testimonials from clients and patients who have found success working with Tatiana during their journey to manage obesity and live their best lives after bariatric surgery.

Hydrangea

By working with Tatiana on my bereavement, anxiety, and related anger issues I learned some techniques to identify my negative self talk. I now have tools, for example, body scanning, meditation, and breathing exercises to try to create healthier patterns based on a discovery of self-compassion.
